The Wounded Angel T-Shirt | Hugo Simberg Art Tee

Exhibit Notes

A Wounded Angel T-shirt for the quiet truth at the centre of Hugo Simberg's painting: the ones with wings sometimes need carrying.

Painted in 1903 by the Finnish symbolist Hugo Simberg, The Wounded Angel shows two boys in dark clothes carrying an angel on a stretcher along a bare road beside the water. Her eyes are bandaged, one wing is hurt, and she holds a few snowdrops — the first flowers of spring, and a sign of healing. Simberg refused to explain it, and Finland has been reading it ever since; in 2006 the country voted it its national painting. The boy at the back looks straight out of the canvas, at whoever is watching.

The artwork

The three figures are lifted from the painting and printed alone on the cotton, without a caption or a frame: the boy in the bowler hat, the bandaged angel bowed on the stretcher, the second boy meeting your eye. Left wordless, the print keeps the painting's silence. A fine-art tee for the museum-goer, a Nordic-art shirt, and a dark academia piece with an unusually gentle heart.

The design begins with a story — read the full Wounded Angel story in the SepiaLore Journal.
