In the 1955 Spanish film Marcelino pan y vino, directed by Ladislao Vajda from José María Sánchez Silva's story, a foundling is raised by Franciscan friars who name him Marcelino and forbid him only the attic. He climbs the stairs anyway and finds a carved Christ on a cross, gaunt and alone. Believing him hungry, the boy takes bread and wine from the kitchen and brings them up day after day; the figure comes down to eat, and calls him friend. When Christ asks what he would like in return, Marcelino asks only to see his mother — and is carried, asleep, to where she is.

The artwork

A black-and-white print, grained like a still from the film, shows the boy stretched on tiptoe, reaching a piece of bread up to the dark arm of the cross.
