Kintsugi T-Shirt | The Break Made It Precious Art Tee
Exhibit Notes
A kintsugi T-shirt for anyone who has been broken and put back together, and refuses to hide the seams.
Kintsugi — “golden joinery” — is the Japanese craft of mending broken ceramics with urushi lacquer and powdered gold, so that the fracture becomes a bright line rather than a secret. The tradition is centuries old and bound up with wabi-sabi, the acceptance of impermanence and imperfection: a repaired bowl is not returned to the way it was, it is made into something with a visible history. The idea has travelled far beyond pottery because people break in the same way, and the gold says the same thing to both — this happened, and still, here I am.
The artwork
A deep black bowl, its cracks traced in fine veins of gold, sits above a hand-lettered script: The break made it precious — Kintsugi. Nothing else. The composition is calm and plain, so the gold does the talking. A Japanese art tee, a wabi-sabi shirt and a quiet gift for a recovery, a fresh start, or someone who has survived a hard year.
The design begins with a story — read the full Kintsugi story in the SepiaLore Journal.
